Description
A Pioneer Missionary among the Maori 1850-1879, being letters and journals of Thomas Samuel Grace edited by S.J. Brittan G.F.,C.W., and A.V. Grace. Hard covered book of 314 pages and printed in 1928. No dust jacket. The cover has wear (see last pic) and the book is very readable but as you will see from my pics there is the odd foxing mark and stain.
The contents are - Turanga, Taupo, The flight to Matata, Opotiki, Auckland and Tauranga. Thomas Samuel Grace in 1850 gave up a prosperous mercantile business and with a young wife and 2 children sailed from Liverpool to the land of the Maori. It took them 8 weeks to get from Tarawera to Taupo to set up a Mission with a lot of Maori carrying their luggage. He encouraged the Maori to ask a fair price for their produce, to become familiar with money, use ploughs and to raise stock profitably. He opposed the sale of Maori land and this made him unpopular with local settlers. The distance from large settlements made it hard for the Grace family ( having 10 children eventually) getting food and supplies. He encouraged sheep farming and imported machinery so the Maori could spin and weave their own wool. This was thwarted when war broke out. He blamed Government policy for the war in Taranaki. He narrowly missed being killed on a number of occasions and had a pamphlet printed in Maori titled Nga minita i roto i te whawhai (ministers involved in the war) it refuted charges against churchmen during the wars. He was 64 when he died. “An interesting piece of early N.Z. history”
