Description
South Island Main Trunk by Geoffrey B. Churchman & Tony Hurst. The book is in 2 parts, Part one - The South Line and Part 2 - The North Line. Card covered book of 128 pages and printed in 1992. The contents are in lovely condition.
For many of the words "main trunk" when applied to a railway are evocative, indicating importance, powerful locomotives, express trains and plenty of action. All this is true of the South Island Main Trunk, although it features less in New Zealand folklore than its North Island counterpart and the drift of population and economic activity to the north has diminished its significance in the national transport over the years. While there is a common appellation, the two parts of the line have a distinctly different history and geography, the south line was the first trunk line opened in the country while the north line was the last. That 67 years separated the bringing into the use of the two routes means that the south line has a short construction but a long operational history, while the opposite is true for the north line.
