The people selling the Cardrona Hotel have narrowed their talks down to eight groups, with interest from buyers coming from as far away as the US.

The 162-year-old hotel and restaurant, located 20 minutes from Wānaka and 40 minutes from Queenstown, has been on the market for five weeks.

Owners Cade and Alexis Thornton said inquiries exceeded expectations and a sale announcement is expected in the coming weeks.

There have been a lot of enquiries from Australia, as well as potential domestic buyers, Cade Thornton said.

The hotel sale appears to have captured the national imagination.

“Each group are fantastic operators with a background in hospitality or hotels.

“Alexis and I are confident that we'll find a highly skilled and experienced publican who will do great things for the hotel.”

The potential buyers from New Zealand, Australia, the US and Singapore were described by Alexis as having an “emotional connection” to the hotel or had visited before.

The listing on Trade Me Property is the third most popular live listing on the site this year, with more than 130,016 views since going live on July 5.

There is accommodation for 44 at the hotel.

The hotel on the Crown Range Rd between Wānaka and Queenstown included a restaurant, year-round beer garden, and 17 ensuite hotel rooms sleeping up to 44 guests.

The listing was expected to close August 15.
